Don’t forget the Groom’s Cake!

Fighting Illini Groom's Cake from Megan & Charlie's Wedding at the beautiful Hotel Intercontinental Chicago.
If you’ve attended weddings recently where there was not one but two cakes, you may have enjoyed what appears to be a charming new tradition: the groom’s cake. The fact is, the groom’s cake isn’t new at all. With origins in the 17th century, the groom’s cake is really a very old wedding tradition, somehow lost and now rediscovered for the most elegant wedding receptions.
Many couples are designing groom’s cakes baked and iced to reflect the groom’s hobbies or interests. Original and creative, groom’s cakes can resemble the groom’s favorite sports team, favorite food, and in the case of our recent wedding for Charlie & Megan, the Groom’s Alma Mater.
So for all of my Bride’s out there, let your imagination run wild and surprise your guests with a very special Groom’s Cake.

Don’t forget the Lighting!
Posted by Tamara Sims | Filed under Wedding Reception Ideas, Wedding Resources
As I was searching for ideas for an upcoming bride, I came across a great video from Wedding Planner David Tutera titled “Don’t Forget the Lighting” that I wanted to share: http://marlothomas.aol.com/2011/04/25/dont-forget-the-lighting-from-david-tutera/
David mentions that lighting is the one element of a wedding that people overlook when planning and most importantly planning their budget. Brides spend thousands and thousands of dollars on gorgeous floral centerpieces, but often forget to pin spot the centerpieces so guests can see them the entire night.
Our sister company, Elegant Event Lighting can help provide “color and light” to your reception so your guests can “see” everything you worked so hard on in terms of flowers and decor.

Wedding Food Trends
Posted by Tamara Sims | Filed under Wedding Reception Ideas, Wedding Resources
For those of you who know me or who regularly read my Blog, you can see that I am a huge foodie. I love trying unique foods both sweet and savory, so when I came across an article on knot.com focusing on unique wedding food trends I had to share some of my favorites with you.
Savory Cupcakes You may remember my post a few weeks ago about the Pizza Cupcake from Jaycakes, Inc., but how about a meatloaf cupcake with mashed potato icing. Your caterer can be as creative as you would like. What a fun idea for cocktail hour.
Street Food This is a great way to introduce your guests to a favorite food from your culture. From Falafel and Pita Bread to Indian Samosas, or even miniature tacos, your guests will have an experience like no other.
Nitro Dessert Station I was first introduced to this cool new concept at The Special Event Conference in 2010, and I have been a fan ever since. Made to order ice cream in minutes! Imagine the look on your guests’ faces when you serve them handcrafted ice cream using liquid nitrogen. And guess what…it is available right here in Chicago through Polonia Catering and it is delicious! http://www.nitrodessertstation.com
Individual Wedding Cakes I have seen this a handful of times at weddings and it is still a favorite of mine. Use your imagination and create mini wedding cakes as the centerpiece for each table. Your baker can mix and match a variety of flavors and during dessert guests can enjoy a slice from their own table or trade with another table. The possibilities are endless and it really adds a lot of fun and excitement during dessert.
Are you serving a unique food item at your wedding reception? Please feel free to share your comments. Happy Planning and Happy Eating!
