Wedding Food Trends
Posted by Tamara Sims | Filed under Wedding Reception Ideas, Wedding Resources
For those of you who know me or who regularly read my Blog, you can see that I am a huge foodie. I love trying unique foods both sweet and savory, so when I came across an article on knot.com focusing on unique wedding food trends I had to share some of my favorites with you.
Savory Cupcakes You may remember my post a few weeks ago about the Pizza Cupcake from Jaycakes, Inc., but how about a meatloaf cupcake with mashed potato icing. Your caterer can be as creative as you would like. What a fun idea for cocktail hour.
Street Food This is a great way to introduce your guests to a favorite food from your culture. From Falafel and Pita Bread to Indian Samosas, or even miniature tacos, your guests will have an experience like no other.
Nitro Dessert Station I was first introduced to this cool new concept at The Special Event Conference in 2010, and I have been a fan ever since. Made to order ice cream in minutes! Imagine the look on your guests’ faces when you serve them handcrafted ice cream using liquid nitrogen. And guess what…it is available right here in Chicago through Polonia Catering and it is delicious! http://www.nitrodessertstation.com
Individual Wedding Cakes I have seen this a handful of times at weddings and it is still a favorite of mine. Use your imagination and create mini wedding cakes as the centerpiece for each table. Your baker can mix and match a variety of flavors and during dessert guests can enjoy a slice from their own table or trade with another table. The possibilities are endless and it really adds a lot of fun and excitement during dessert.
Are you serving a unique food item at your wedding reception? Please feel free to share your comments. Happy Planning and Happy Eating!

Cupcakes!
Posted by Tamara Sims | Filed under Wedding Resources
Yes, I am writing about cupcakes again! As my search for the perfect cupcake continues a former Something 2 Dance 2 bride Jackie Fiedler launched a new company Jaycakes, Inc. (of course I love the name of her company considering my husband is Jay and he too loves cupcakes as much as I do). The premise is simple, homemade cupcakes, with a wide variety of unique fun flavors to please anyone’s palette. I met with Jackie at our office to learn more about her business, and of course to sample some of her delicious cupcakes…little did I know she would be bringing 1 dozen different flavors to taste. In 2 days I made my way through 1/2 of the cupcakes (not alone, I did share each cupcake with Jay), and my favorites so far are Cinnamon Sugar & Peanut Butter & Jelly. The Red Velvet and Key Lime Pie flavors have been staring at me, but I haven’t made my way through those just yet!
Tell me about yourself and your business: My name is Jackie Fiedler, I am a 33 year old commercial interior designer by day and cupcake baker by night!
What town is your business located? I am located in Round Lake, IL but will deliver almost anywhere! I am often in the west and southern suburbs visiting family and can wrap a delivery into those visits!
How did Jaycakes begin? The start of Jaycakes…after waiting in line for hours at one of the popular cupcake stores, I decided to try baking some cupcakes myself. Now, keep in mind – before this day – I never baked anything from scratch! It was so much fun!! Next thing I knew – I was scouring the internet for fun recipes and baking almost everyday. My family and coworkers were happy to taste test! I love hearing the feedback and seeing everyones reactions when they taste the cupcakes! My biggest goal – having fun!! As long as I enjoy my time in the kitchen, I’m happy.
Be honest, did you name your company after your Wedding DJ Jay? (she laughs) Jay did an amazing job at my wedding, but the name came about quite simply J for my first initial and cakes, for cupcakes. I think Jaycakes has a nice ring to it!
What type of events make up most of your business? I started my business with sample packs to reach out to customers. I’ve been doing birthday parties, wedding showers and single orders for people who just like cupcakes. I’ve done two tasting parties and love those, I make a large variety of flavors and everyone gets to try a bunch, plus purchase additional cupcakes to take home!
Cupcake Tasting Parties…what a great concept! They have been very well received. The first tasting party I did had over 25 people.
Do you have a favorite cupcake flavor? My favorite cupcake is the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough…it has a ball of dough in the center of a chocolate chip cake with a delicious cookie flavored frosting! For something different, I also really like my original Pizza recipe!
You are not going to believe this but Jay’s favorite cupcake so far is your Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough!
Any favorite cupcake shows that you watch? I watch Cupcake Wars on occasion, but that’s the only cupcake show I’ve seen. I need to set the DVR to catch some others!
I am a cupcake show junkie…you need to catch DC Cupcakes, they actually just made a Pizza Cupcake on a recent episode for a Sweet 16 Party…it looked really yummy. I haven’t seen that show; my Pizza Cupcake Recipe came about for a non-cupcake eating co-worker of my mom’s, so I decided to make a savory cupcake and it ended up being a big hit.
I always have to close my interview with a music related question, so If you could only have one song on your I-pod, which song would it be? I listen to so much music, that is hard for me to decide! Right now, “Raise Your Glass” by P!nk is the most played song on my phone, with “Fuego” by Pitbulll right behind.
I really thought you would have picked “Sugar, Sugar” by the Archies!
If you would like to host a Cupcake Tasting Party or place a cupcake order for your Wedding or special event, you can find Jaycakes at: http://www.facebook.com/jaycakesinc, or contact Jackie directly at jaycakesinc@gmail.com
