July is National Ice Cream Month!

Enjoying a frozen custard concrete at Shake Shack in NYC!

July is one of my favorite months of the year!  It is National Ice Cream Month which gives me even more reason to visit my favorite ice cream and gelato shops!  And a great way to beat the heat for those July weddings is to include this delicious treat on your menu.

There are so many options out there to choose from.  How about hiring an ice cream truck at the end of the night to provide classic treats to your guests like ice cream sandwiches, fudgesicles, and chocolate covered ice cream bars.

How fun would it be to have an Ice Cream Truck at your Wedding!

Or maybe you want your guests to get interactive?  A create your own ice cream or gelato bar would be a fun addition to your reception.  Include toppings like caramel, hot fudge, strawberries, cookies, peanut butter cups, toffee pieces…the sky is the limit!

What about hiring a chef to make fresh ice cream on the spot for your guests using liquid nitrogen?  It’s inventive, creative and super creamy.  Polonia Catering in Chicago is one of the best I have tried and they even have the option for a custom mix-in bar…similar to a blizzard or concrete.  Your guests will love it!

My favorite spots include:  All Chocolate Kitchen in Geneva for gelato, Homer’s Ice Cream in Wilmette for old fashioned home made ice cream, Shake Shack in NYC for the best frozen custard concretes and Niche in Geneva for fancy ice cream desserts.

I hope I have inspired you to celebrate National Ice Cream Month.  And remember, every day is a perfect day to visit your favorite local ice cream or gelato shop!

Wedding Food Trends

Enjoying delicious Greek Pita Bread

For those of you who know me or who regularly read my Blog, you can see that I am a huge foodie. I love trying unique foods both sweet and savory, so when I came across an article on knot.com focusing on unique wedding food trends I had to share some of my favorites with you.

Savory Cupcakes You may remember my post a few weeks ago about the Pizza Cupcake from Jaycakes, Inc., but how about a meatloaf cupcake with mashed potato icing.  Your caterer can be as creative as you would like.  What a fun idea for cocktail hour.

Street Food This is a great way to introduce your guests to a favorite food from your culture. From Falafel and Pita Bread to Indian Samosas, or even miniature tacos, your guests will have an experience like no other.

Nitro Dessert Station I was first introduced to this cool new concept at The Special Event Conference in 2010, and I have been a fan ever since.  Made to order ice cream in minutes! Imagine the look on your guests’ faces when you serve them handcrafted ice cream using liquid nitrogen.  And guess what…it is available right here in Chicago through Polonia Catering and it is delicious!  http://www.nitrodessertstation.com

Individual Wedding Cakes I have seen this a handful of times at weddings and it is still a favorite of mine.  Use your imagination and create mini wedding cakes as the centerpiece for each table.  Your baker can mix and match a variety of flavors and during dessert guests can enjoy a slice from their own table or trade with another table.  The possibilities are endless and it really adds a lot of fun and excitement during dessert.

Are you serving a unique food item at your wedding reception?  Please feel free to share your comments.  Happy Planning and Happy Eating!
